Laser Hair Removal in Exeter

Laser targets the pigment in the hair to reduce growth over a course of sessions. It is not a single appointment — the treatment works with the hair growth cycle, which is why sessions are spaced out.

Current price and appointment length are shown on Booksy.

What laser hair removal is

Laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and converted to heat at the follicle. Only hairs that are actively growing at the time respond, and at any given moment only a proportion of the hair in an area is in that phase — which is why laser hair removal is always planned as a course, with gaps between sessions rather than back-to-back appointments.

How many sessions an area needs, and how much reduction you see, varies from person to person. Hair colour, hair thickness, skin tone, the area being treated and hormonal factors all make a difference. Your therapist will set out what is realistic for you at consultation rather than quoting a standard number.

Who it suits

  • Anyone tired of shaving or waxing the same area repeatedly
  • Facial and body areas alike, discussed at consultation
  • People who react badly to waxing or get regular ingrown hairs
  • Those able to commit to a course spaced over several months

Your appointment

What to expect

  1. 01

    Consultation

Your therapist assesses the area, your skin and your hair, asks about your medical history and medication, and explains what a course would realistically involve for you.

  2. 02

    Patch test

A patch test is carried out and then left for the required period before treatment can start. This is not optional and it cannot be done on the same day as your first session.

  3. 03

    Preparing for a session

The area is shaved rather than waxed, plucked or epilated before you come in — laser needs the follicle intact. Avoid sun exposure and fake tan beforehand.

  4. 04

    The session

The area is treated in passes. Most people describe it as a quick hot snap against the skin. Sessions are usually short.

  5. 05

    The course

Sessions are spaced apart to match the hair growth cycle. Your therapist will plan the intervals with you and review progress as you go.

Afterwards

Aftercare

General guidance only — your therapist will give you aftercare specific to your skin and your treatment on the day.

  • Expect redness and slight swelling around the follicles for a short period
  • Keep the area out of the sun and use a high-factor SPF
  • No sunbeds, saunas, steam rooms or hot baths for the first 48 hours
  • Avoid heavy exercise on the day of treatment
  • Do not wax, pluck or epilate between sessions — shave instead
  • Skip perfumed products and exfoliants on the area while it settles

Laser Hair Removal — your questions

How many sessions will I need?

It genuinely depends on the area, your hair and your skin, and anyone who quotes a number before seeing you is guessing. Your therapist will give you a realistic plan at consultation.

Do I need a patch test?

Yes, always, and it has to be done in advance with a waiting period before your first session. Please factor that in if you are working to a deadline such as a holiday or a wedding.

Should I shave before my appointment?

Yes. Shave the area beforehand, but do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate it — the treatment needs the hair in the follicle.

Does it work on all hair colours?

Laser works by targeting pigment, so it responds best to darker hair. Very fair, red, grey and white hair contain little pigment and respond poorly. Your therapist will be straight with you about this at consultation.

Is it permanent?

It is best understood as long-term hair reduction rather than permanent removal. Results vary and some people choose occasional maintenance sessions after completing a course.

Can I have it if I am on medication or pregnant?

Some medications and conditions mean laser is not appropriate, and treatment is not carried out during pregnancy. Tell your therapist everything relevant at consultation — that is exactly what it is for.
